I am always amazed at the difference between a high performance summer tire and a high performance winter tire. Today was the day to change as there is real snow on the way and... our county road is being dug up for utilities. So I’m doing hill starts on these summer tires in mud and it’s not going well.
Photo award if you can identify these two tires! Hint I think they are very commonly used among people who like to drive.

Lefts are absolutely ws80s I have no idea what the summers are

Yeah the Bridgestone is very easy to identify. The other one also starts with a B.

Yep. You get a Z!

Th e summers are BFG Comp 2s. How do you like those? I run General Gmax RSs on my car as they perform quite well in the copious amounts of rain we get every year. Plus they are significantly cheaper than the Continental Extreme Sport Contacts made in the same factory.
The winters? No clue lol.

I had this exact pairing for my FiST - Blizzaks and Co
mp-2s

Congratulations you get a car photo. And I think this tire combination is pretty good.

I like the BFG’s a lot. Make no mistake tho these are dedicated summer tires, they do fine in the rain but not great on gravel and terrible in mud and snow.

The winters look like Blizzak Ws80s. I had a set of them on the e90. Now I’m running Conti Viking Contacts for the winter. They seem to do the job alright not now as well as those Blizzaks

I got some Firestone winters for the Outback and am curious to see if they are as good as the blizzaks I had in before. The outback is pretty good already with AWD so I can accept a non premium tire on that car.

I wondered if you had seen it

Nope. I have not been to Missoula since August and that was just a day trip.

Isn’t that a WS80? I thought those were snow tires, not high performance winter.

Left tire is a blizzak. Right one is a nitto or hankook. That's my best guess.

BFG.

I look at a really aggressive winter tire as being a high performance tire in winter conditions ie it works great.

I see.
It’s mostly confusing because High Performance Winter is an actual tire category for cold weather-rated tires that are designed more for clear and icy roads as opposed to snow tires that are designed for well... snow.
I had WS80s on my old Mazda3, but it was totally unnecessary where I live, so I’ve switched to Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3s because they’re a bit less squishy on dry winter roads.

Dry winter roads, we will have those in April.

Agreed. Wife's van has the Blizzaks. They are great for it and they are awesome in the snow. I have the SottoZeros on my GTI and they are great for the cold and ok for the snow.
